The District and Ruta N to Train 25 People with Cognitive Disabilities in Science, Technology, and Innovation
By Ruta N -This Thursday, March 21, the District and Ruta N commemorate World Down Syndrome Day by launching the Inclusteam program, a social innovation initiative that will provide training for 25 young people with cognitive disabilities, enhancing their abilities to contribute to the knowledge economy.
"According to the latest National Quality of Life Survey by DANE, only 17 out of 100 people with disabilities in Colombia reach higher education, with limited representation in STEAM skills training. This undoubtedly leads to fewer opportunities to participate in the job market or other educational settings. In response to this situation, Ruta N has formed alliances to offer alternatives that not only highlight these individuals' capabilities but also equip them with tools to actively engage in new environments,” explained Carolina Londoño, Executive Director of Ruta N.
The program is aimed at young people aged 18 to 28 with Down syndrome, autism spectrum disorders, Asperger’s syndrome, and other cognitive disabilities.
Participants will learn elements of STEAM—Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics.
Additionally, the initiative includes a family intervention scheme, enhancing participants' experience through the "Family University." This platform provides caregivers with the tools and knowledge to support these young adults in their transition to greater independence and active engagement in city life.
"I’m excited to meet the teachers and want to study something related to technology as part of my life plan. I really enjoyed building those types of cars. What I’m most interested in is meeting new people and learning more,” said Inclusteam program beneficiary María Paz Suárez.
The program will take place at Ruta N facilities, CES University, and through virtual spaces, thanks to a partnership with the Saldarriaga Concha Foundation and the MamaCate Foundation.
