Open Source Ventilators, Bots for Supporting 123, and Data for Controlling the Pandemic

In response to the global public health challenge posed by COVID-19, Medellín has activated all its capabilities in science, technology, and innovation to rapidly generate solutions contributing to the prevention, care, and control of the virus. Ruta N plays a key role in connecting efforts across various fronts.

Open Source Ventilator Design and Manufacturing

Ventilators are critical for COVID-19 patients with respiratory infections, as they keep lung alveoli open with positive pressure. Currently, these devices are not produced locally in Colombia. In collaboration with the Bioinstrumentation and Clinical Engineering Research Group (GIBIC) at the University of Antioquia and Industrias Médicas Sampedro, two types of respiratory ventilators are being designed—one mechanical and one pneumatic. These open-source designs will be made publicly available for global use.

Data for Public Health Services

The Medellín Health Department needs support in managing the high volume of calls related to COVID-19. Ruta N, along with Vitalbox, Biva, and Vozy, developed a voice bot to effectively respond to calls on the 123 emergency line and assist with citizen evaluations and reports.

Production of Antibacterial Gel

In addition to soap, antibacterial gel has become essential for preventing contamination. Local companies are being mobilized to produce gel, using their certified facilities for cosmetic or pharmaceutical production. Ruta N is working to connect these businesses with the necessary resources to meet the demand.

#InnovaPorLaVida is collecting funds for these four initiatives aimed at combating COVID-19. You can learn more and contribute here.
