What Is a Gamer, and What Types Exist?

By Ruta N -

More than 50 years ago, the first video game console appeared, and at some point in our lives we’ve all interacted with video games—whether on consoles or computers. But that alone doesn’t make someone a gamer. So, who qualifies?

Video games were born as a form of entertainment, but in recent years—with the rise of new technologies—some people have dedicated a large part of their lives to gaming. For some, it’s still about fun, while for others it has become a profession.

A gamer belongs to teams, attends conferences, competes in tournaments, and even earns money from it. Today, gaming is a full-fledged business model.

But let’s get back to the game. In the gaming world, there’s its own vocabulary and players are often classified into categories based on their traits. Here are just a few:

  • THE CAMPER: The master of stealth. This gamer hides in the safest corners of the map, patiently waiting to ambush unsuspecting enemies. Always lurking, their strategy is simple: “If they don’t see you, they can’t beat you.” Frustration guaranteed.
  • THE PADAWAN: The hopeful newcomer, just beginning to uncover the secrets of the video game multiverse. Veteran gamers take them under their wing, sharing the lore, teaching shortcuts, and passing on the survival tricks of the trade.
  • THE “RAGE KID”: Usually the youngest in the lobby. Their skills may be limited, but their ego is not. When they lose, expect shouting, blame, and chaos. Their true talent? Driving everyone else mad.
  • THE SERAPHIM: The main healer no one wants to be, yet everyone needs. This gamer sacrifices themselves for the good of the team, keeping others alive even at the cost of their own survival. Without them, the group risks a total wipeout.
  • THE JOHN WICK: The ultimate boss you never want to face. Armed with elite skills, this is the carry every squad dreams of. A natural strategist, they shoulder the team and lead it to victory.

Bonus (for non-gamers):

  • LORE: The main storyline of a game.
  • TILTED: A state of frustration or loss of control after a poor play or string of defeats.
  • MAIN HEALER: A player who specializes in support roles, keeping the team alive.
  • CARRY: From the idea of “carrying the team,” this is the player who leads the group to victory.
