Medellín strengthens entrepreneurial leadership in GEIAL 2025

By Ruta N -

Medellín once again stood out as one of the strongest entrepreneurship ecosystems in Latin America, according to the annual report by the Latin American Intelligent Ecosystems Group (GEIAL). The city scored 63 points on the Dynamic Entrepreneurship Conditions Index and ranked eighth among 27 ecosystems in the region, consolidating its position within the group of leaders. The report shows moderate progress compared to 2023 and highlights stable institutional maturity supported by an innovation agenda that continues to deliver results.

Among the main strengths identified by the study are a strong entrepreneurial culture, the visibility of leading women entrepreneurs within the ecosystem and the growing presence of technology-based startups. Coordination between academia, industry and government, along with the strengthening of the Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) District, stand out as pillars driving the creation of knowledge-based businesses. In addition, Medellín demonstrated notable progress in local policies and financial support, reflecting a joint effort between the public and private sectors.

The report also outlines challenges the city must address to sustain its growth. These include attracting and retaining entrepreneurial talent, closing gaps in private financing and strengthening connections with national and international networks and collaborations related to entrepreneurship and funding. Furthermore, progress is needed in the regulatory process of the STI District to ensure stability and trust among ecosystem stakeholders.

The report concludes by identifying strategic opportunities to boost emerging sectors such as clean energy, green technologies, creative and digital industries joined with traditional sectors like textiles and manufacturing, as well as science-technology business and women entrepreneurship.
