Five Keys to Raising Capital in Latin America

By Ruta N -

Ruta N and the Medellín Venture Capital strategy continue to promote high-value conversations to strengthen the investment ecosystem in the region.

In one of these meetings, the discussion focused on fundraising in Latin America, its challenges and opportunities, and Camilo Botero, Co-founder and Managing Partner at Veronorte, shared five key strategies for raising capital based on his experience and insights in the venture capital world.

  1. Know the Client: One of the most important keys to raising capital begins with thoroughly understanding the investor. Knowing exactly what they are looking for, how it aligns with the strategy, the minimum investment amount, and the fund's model, and being selective with investors by verifying their understanding of the business, are determining factors for building alliances and generating trust. According to Camilo Botero, every conversation represents an opportunity to open doors and strengthen strategic relationships.

  2. Request Internal Capabilities: It is important to activate capabilities that generate "strategic miles" for the business. Corporate funds require budget, structure, time, and dedicated talent, elements that allow you to connect existing knowledge with concrete actions for the business.

  3. Understand and articulate risk: Fundraising conversations should be approached with the understanding that fund managers have complete clarity about the opportunities they are pursuing, their competitive advantages, and the risks associated with their strategy. Furthermore, investors increasingly value the ability to synthesize these elements clearly and support them with solid and structured information.

  4. Demonstrate clear differentiation: It is necessary to explain why your business is different, how it builds its portfolio and competitiveness, and why even a small market is not a limitation to generating returns.

  5. Listen to the market: The thesis must be built by listening to market signals and understanding investors' real expectations.

These key elements have allowed Veronorte to raise capital from 90 offices owned by families in Medellín, demonstrating that there is interest in this type of asset when the strategies are structured and supported.

With spaces like this, Ruta N continues to strengthen the ecosystem's capabilities to boost venture capital in Medellín and Latin America.
