Ruta N and EPM Join Efforts to Strengthen Gas Distribution Security
By Ruta N -EPM and Ruta N Partner with Galekxa Robotics for Safer Gas Distribution
In a groundbreaking collaboration, EPM and Ruta N announced a pilot program to enhance the security of natural gas distribution infrastructure. The project, led by Medellín-based Galekxa Robotics, applies cutting-edge technologies like AI, IoT, and digital twins to address safety challenges in critical installations.
Innovative Technology for Safety
Galekxa Robotics developed a remote monitoring application using cameras to detect and notify of suspicious activity in real-time. The system includes a local video database and remote control capabilities for deterrents in case of security breaches. Over a five-month implementation period, this solution aims to protect infrastructure, prevent vandalism, and enhance safety for nearby communities.
A Milestone in Public-Private Collaboration
The pilot is part of the Center for Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Digital Transformation (CIET), established in 2020 to develop technological solutions for improving public services and quality of life. Darío Amar Flórez, Executive VP of New Business, Innovation, and Technology at EPM, highlighted the importance of addressing gas safety challenges through digital innovation and partnerships with startups.
Key Focus Areas
The project will initially secure five natural gas installations in Medellín’s metropolitan area, targeting risks identified by EPM’s Operational Security initiative. It aims to prevent economic losses, protect communities, and strengthen EPM’s critical infrastructure.
Impact of Open Innovation
Between 2020 and 2023, Ruta N’s Open Innovation Service facilitated 113 challenges, attracted 867 solution providers, and published 140 initiatives, resulting in 30 successful business cases. This pilot underscores the potential of public-private partnerships in driving impactful, technology-based solutions.
Commitment to Community and Innovation
“This collaboration connects EPM with companies offering high-tech solutions to strengthen public services. By integrating corporations, startups, and science-based projects, we aim to deliver real benefits to the community,” said María Isabel Sierra, Director of Operations at Ruta N.
The partnership between EPM, Ruta N, and Galekxa Robotics reflects a shared commitment to safety, technology, and community well-being, setting a new standard for innovation in essential services.
