The World Economic Forum Highlights Two Best Practices in the Use of Technology in Medellín
By Ruta N -Medellín once again stands out on the global stage. Two of its most innovative initiatives were published in the GovTech Intelligence Hub of the World Economic Forum (WEF), an international platform that compiles success stories and best practices in the use of technology to improve public management. This recognition positions the city as a benchmark for digital governance and a living laboratory of innovation for the world.
The GovTech Intelligence Hub, led by the Centres for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (C4IR) in Kyiv and Berlin, connects governments, businesses, and organizations working on technological solutions to optimize government operations and public services. Thanks to the efforts of the Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution of Medellín (C4IR Medellín), the city’s initiatives were documented, reviewed, and published on this platform, showcasing Medellín’s impact within the global public innovation ecosystem.
The recognized initiatives are SIES Medellín – Integrated Security Model for Smart Territories, a system that brings together ten emergency response agencies in a single center supported by video surveillance, georeferencing, and real-time analytics, increasing incident response capacity by 18%; and the Environmental Secretariat’s project, which uses digital tools like KoboToolbox and Power BI to standardize and visualize data from Participatory Budgeting projects, achieving cost savings while strengthening transparency and citizen trust.
These cases not only demonstrate Medellín’s ability to leverage science, technology, and innovation for the benefit of its citizens but also position the city as a key player in the global conversation on GovTech. Under the leadership of Ruta N and C4IR Medellín, the city continues to connect government, industry, academia, and civil society to turn challenges into opportunities and to consolidate its role as a hub for digital transformation and inclusive development in Latin America.
