Ruta N presents the first comprehensive overview of Medellín’s science, technology and innovation ecosystem, based on data collected through Pulso CTI.

Ahead of the publication of the District’s Official Innovation Ranking on November 18, Ruta N presents some of the key findings from the first comprehensive overview of Medellín’s science, technology and innovation ecosystem, based on data collected through Pulso CTI. According to the Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (C4IR Medellín), 81% of companies in the city plan to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) over the next three years, 38% of organisations already use this technology or advanced analytics, and 71% of public-sector stakeholders consider its implementation essential.

Talent development is also progressing. Currently, 14 higher education institutions have incorporated AI into their academic programmes, while 60% of organisations provide their staff with basic or technical-level training. In addition, over the past two years, more than 2,000 students in grades nine, ten and eleven from four public schools have developed skills in data analytics, AI and web development through EstudIA, an initiative led by Ruta N through C4IR Medellín and the Secretariat of Education.

The overview, available at rutanmedellin.org, identifies opportunities to strengthen specialised capabilities: 45% of organisations need personnel with advanced AI skills. Meanwhile, startups in this sector generate 1,239 direct jobs, according to Ruta N’s StartIA platform, making it the fourth-largest job-generating vertical, after software, fintech and energytech. Through these strategies, Ruta N is preparing to provide the city with a much more specialised offering, guided by data analysis and interpretation.
