The project was developed through Generación Tech, Ruta N’s program that fosters technological talent in the District’s classrooms.
Eleventh-grade students at Pedro Luis Villa School, located in Manrique (Commune 3), are developing a smart helmet that integrates sensors, GPS, and a mobile app to detect changes in speed and facilitate emergency response in the event of a potential traffic accident.
The project is part of Breakers, Generación Tech’s advanced training initiative in innovation and entrepreneurship. This Ruta N program reached more than 200 public and private schools in Medellín this year, bringing science, technology, innovation, and mathematics to more than 6,000 children and young people.
The prototype features a signaling system that activates a white light when the motorcycle starts moving and a red light when it detects a decrease in speed. It also includes sensors that identify potential impacts and trigger an emergency protocol. Through an Android app, the user can confirm that they are safe. If they do not respond, the helmet emits an audible alert for 45 seconds. During the first 15 seconds, the user can cancel the notification. If they do not, an alert is sent to an emergency contact and rescue services during the remaining 30 seconds.
"Through Breakers, we learned how to identify a customer profile using a video game we created in Scratch. We used SCAMPER to identify the opportunities available to us compared with other people, and we learned about value propositions and Medellín’s traffic accident and fatality rates," said Caleb Álvarez, a student at Pedro Luis Villa School.
The prototype is currently being tested. Participating in this initiative will allow the students to validate their solution with real users, identify potential customers and partners, and strengthen their value proposition. Breakers supports nine student groups from educational institutions across Medellín, providing tools to analyze markets, understand user needs, and explore implementation opportunities.
"Young people's talent can become a transformative force when they have spaces to develop their ideas and put them to work for the benefit of others. We want more students to discover the potential of their abilities and find in science, technology, and entrepreneurship the tools to bring their ideas to life and help build a Medellín with more opportunities for everyone," said Simón Arango, Director of Strategic Projects at Ruta N.
Through initiatives such as Generación Tech, Ruta N promotes the development of digital and entrepreneurial skills in the classroom, connecting learning with real-world challenges in the city. These initiatives allow students to explore how scientific and technological knowledge can be applied to social challenges and help them develop solutions with the potential to contribute to the District’s economic and social development.
